10/15/06 Take a Walk With Us!

The kids & I (not Hannah, though)were wandering around the property this morning while it was still fresh from all the rain. I thought it would be fun to take you along.

First thing we had to do was smell all the flowers. Susanna has to smell every flower and point to them and then she wants me to smell them, too. Here's a small section of our flowers:

After filling our noses up with flower petals, we walked over to the chicken coop. On the way there, Susanna stopped to enjoy a puddle:

We let the chickens out and were treated to a chicken stampede-LOL. We gave them some canteloupe that was starting to get less than fresh and they enjoyed it immensely.

Then we walked over to visit the horses. Picked & ate raspberries that I though didn't survive a transplant last year. Two of the horses wouldn't come out of the shed. So, here is Bonnie:

We walked all around the horse pasture to get to the garden. Pretty soon the zucchini & cucumbers will be ready! There are 12 raised beds here, but you can't see them all. That tall wild stuff is asparagus. Susanna still finds an occasional strawberry.

From there we walked thru a grassy area to get to the driveway to see the cows. The horses are usually there, too, but we brought them to the upper pasture to eat the grass down.

This is our mama cow & baby. We recently sold a bull and butchered a steer, so this is it for now. Looking to buy another steer and soon a borrowed bull will be coming to breed the mama for next year's calf.

We then walked down the rest of the driveway just because it's fun. Here's the field across the road and our dog, Freya. The field was just mowed and it smells so yummy!! It was planted with alfalfa. It belongs to a friend of ours. If the horses get loose, that is the first place they go usually, or up to the house to eat the lawn.

On our way back up, we found some blackberries already ripe in the curve of the driveway. Here's Jonah with Freya & our other dog, Samson.

That's it! Every time we walk, I look around remembering when this property was all wild with no buildings on it and full of trees we had to cut down to make room for the house & lawn. The driveway was an old logging trail until my dh worked his magic on it. Oh, and so many friends helped us, which I am so thankful for.

Sometimes I miss the wild days here. We'd camp here in our tent (I was pregnant with our first child then) and it felt like we were the only people in the world-it was so quite and we couldn't see the road or any houses.

God is so good-I feel so full from His many blessings!

Hope you enjoyed walking with us!
