11/22/06 No Deer Yet

Well, they've been hunting every day and haven't had any good shots yet. Pat's friend that's been here since last Thursday left Wednesday.

Hopefully we'll have some deer soon for our freezer.

We've had a really good school week so far. We've done a lot of reading about the American Revolution, we're reading also from a long book called The Reb and the Redcoats which is excellent!

We dramatized the Boston Massacre which wasn't really what I'd call a massacre. It was 400 colonists egging on 8 British soldiers. They were in their faces daring them to shoot with clubs raised and throwing things at the British. 5 Bostonians died. I'd never heard that part of the story before.

The other interesting thing is that John Adams & Josiah Quincy defended them and kept them from getting hanged. Only 2 of them were found guilty of anything and they had their thumbs branded.

Samuel Adams (John's cousin) had Paul Revere make a copper engraving of what looked like the British firing upon peaceful Bostonians. The book also showed a more accurate painting of what really happened.

We're learning about all the taxes and intolerable acts right now.

We also are studying about Michaelangelo-kind of a rabbit trail. We watched "The Agony & the Ecstacy" and then the kids layed on their backs inside boxes and painted the ceilings of the boxes like Michaelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Here's Jonah :

He got paint in his mouth and all over him.

Pat's friend took us out to dinner Tuesday at Applebees and that was a very nice treat!

Earlier this week Hannah had her hair cut to donate to Locks of Love. I have pics, but need to download them.

It is a bit difficult for me to see her with short hair-it's in bob and is very cute. But, I am actually having a really hard time with it and have cried about it. She's never had short hair before and I can't wait for it to grow back.

She has been determined for the last year or so to grow it long enough for Locks of Love-it's an organization where they take donated hair and make wigs for children with cancer who have lost their hair due to chemo.

I'm really proud of her wanting to do this. It's really neat to think that her hair will be worn by someone who really needs it.

Our Thanksgiving was nice. We had dinner with Pat's family. I'm making turkey broth right now.

At home, we read a poem called 5 Kernals of Corn and read a few books about Thanksgiving. It always amazes me. We also listened to a fantastic story on CD from Focus on the Family called "Squanto."

It's a story I never learned about in school and is just amazing!

I think that's it. I'm not feeling so well today-I've been dizzy on and off all day long and was nauseous this morning. Will write more later.
